Road America
The Road America weekend went good for us.  It started off with me getting
to race one of Buell's new
XBRR Race Bikes.  We entered the 200k Solo
Team Challenge.  I had on ok launch, and started working my way through
traffic.  The RR rode great, had good power, it was fun to ride a bike with
good horsepower again.  The race was 39 laps, we had a two pit stop
strategy.  I pitted on lap 13, just received fuel, and went back out.  I was
finally getting used to the bike more, pulling off 2:29 lap times, but still not
comfortable enough to push any harder.  Lap 26 came around and we pitted
again.  The Pirelli tires were still working pretty good, so I decided not to
change them and just get fuel again.  The last 13 laps were the hardest, the
front end started pushing some, and my back was getting a little sore.  I saw
the white flag, did my last lap, then when I was coming up on the flag stand
again it was still white.  At the last second they threw the checkered.  I
thought they screwed up, there was no way I won this, but I did.  I won the
solo and the overall.  Good start to the weekend.  For Thunderbike, we
qualified 1st. with a 2:31.88., at a weight of 428lbs. with 105.7 hp. At the start,
I was fourth into turn one.  I then passed both Kern and Key going into turn
six. Dan Bilansky was leading, I tried to draft by him down the front straight
but couldn't, so I   had to pull back in behind him.  He was riding good, so I
didn't try to pass going into any turns in the beginning of the race, I wanted us
to pull away from the rest of the field.  I passed him going into turn one about
half-way, put my head down for a couple laps.  Then on the last lap, Key
passed me down the front straight.  His bike was fast, pulling me out of
corners and top end.  I tried getting close to him then caught a lapper
between us under the Billy Mitchell Bridge  I knew I was done, he had too
much of a gap now with just one corner left.  So I finished second for the
weekend, Key the winner, and Bilansky getting third.  The weight and
horsepowers were as follows:
Key...339 lbs @ 82.6 hp
Me....420 lbs @ 95 hp
Bilansky....399 lbs @ 91.9 hp
.Summit  Point
AMA
Road America
I received a call from Innovative Motorcycle Research/FastBuells.com after
Summit Point asking me if I would be available for the AMA round at Road
America.  Mike Hale who took my ride this year, was injured after a crash
while testing, and he wasn't sure if he would be able to race.  I was driving
with my team back to Wisconsin anyways, so I decided to stay for the
weekend.  Mike rode on Thursday, but was pretty sore, he hurt some ribs,
his foot, and his back was pretty sore also.  On Friday morning the team told
me he wasn't able to race, to get signed up.  I went out on the RR and loved
the way it felt, it was lighter than the previous RR's that I rode.  The main
problem I had was I couldn't finish off the corners, when I would gas it, I
would run wide.  So I was getting eatn' up on drives.  Qualifying was next, I
made it 3/4's of a lap when the sky opened up.  It started to pour, then hail,
so qualifying was put off until our morning practice on Saturday.  With
limited practice time on the bike, this hurt, he lost a needed session.
The next morning, I qualified 18th. at a 2:25.7 lap time, not what I was hoping
for.  The race was next, we made some changes for the race to try to get rid
of the exiting problems.  I had a good launch, then missed my shift while
wheeling, so I had time to make up already.  Passed a couple guys going into
turn three, then gassed it and ran wide off the track, not too bad, I still could
stay in the gas but lost some time.  The changes we made actually made the
problem worse so it was time to ride around it.  I started going better,
dropping time some,  Best lap was a 2:24.3.  I started to catch some guys,
got around and ended up finishing 14th.  Not great, but I'm the top finishing
Buell XBRR in the AMA to date.  Just needed more time and I think we could
of definitely dropped a couple more seconds and been into the top ten.
Hopefully I'll get another chance soon.
Heartland Park
I haven't been to Heartland Park in Topeka since 03'.  It was a fun track, just
a little bumpy.  Well they repaved the whole track, and added a new section
to it.  I loved it, it was fun.  The track flowed great, it was definitely a riders
track, none of the straights were that long.  The more I got used to the track,
the more the times were coming down.  My Veatch Motorsports Buell was
working great, not many suspension changes needed.  The C.C.S.
Thunderbike race went great.  I had a good launch from the 3rd. row,
passed Key and Lacey on the second lap and put my head down to catch
Bemisderfer who was pulling a gap.  I caught and passed him on the next
lap, then pulled about a two second lead to take the win.  Got down in the
low 1:49 lap times so I was happy with that.  The next day we qualified on
the pole with a 1:48.36.  My launch in the race was nothing to write home
about, I was third into turn one.  I passed Key halfway through the first lap,
then caught Kern coming out of the last corner and passed him down the
front straight.  Rode hard for about three laps, looked back and there was
no one there.  So I backed it down some, actually too much.  I looked back
after half-way point and Bemisderfer was catching me, I slowed down like 2
seconds a lap not realizing it, I'm an idiot.  That woke me up and I started to
ride hard again, did my best lap of a 1:48.2 soon after.  Kept the lead and
brought us home our first victory of the season.  After the race I looked to
see where Bemisderfer was and he was nowhere in site.  After I came in I
found out he crashed (trying to catch me will do that), but still picked it up to
finish fifth.  Bilansky and Kern both had mechanical problems, so they
finished 11th and 12th, this was a great weekend for the points chase.  I
received maximum points for qualifying and the race and my competitors all
suffered from some bad luck.  Now were back in the hunt for the
championship.
V.I.R.
V.I.R. is one of my favorite tracks so I was looking forward to this weekend.
The weekend started of good again, fast times right out of the truck.  ASRA
ran a shortened weekend, so everything was crammed into the next days
schedule.  We qualified first at a 1:33.481 which broke my track record
from last year.  We were almost two second ahead of the next qualifier.    I
was asked by ASRA to run an on-board camera to get some laps of V.I.R.
for them and do some commendation on it as well.  Ryan from
superbikepics.com set it up and it turned out great, I love doing film work.
If I get a copy and permission, I'll post it on my site.  The CCS Thunderbike
race was next.  We had a second wave start behind the 125 g.p. bike's, not
too smart of a decision by the organizers.  I had a good start, was second
of our wave going into turn one behind Bemisderfer.  I passed him between
turns three and four on lap two.  Rode as hard as I could without taking out
packs of 125's in front of me.  Did my fastest lap of the weekend at a
1:33.09.  I was starting to slide the read some, but could still get good
drives.  I ride fast, and I win.  There was rain threatening us all weekend,
we were lucky until Sunday, it was coming down for our race.  My start for
the ASRA Thunderbike race was good, I was third into turn one.  I passed
Bilansky, then a lap later I got past Bemisderfer.  I'm not the best rain rider
so I was happy to be running with these guys who I have loads of respect
for especially in the wet.  The front straight was crazy, deep puddles, so we
were hydro plaining at over 100.  I almost crashed once, so didn't hold it on
as hard through there.  Bilansky passed me back on the third lap, and I just
wanted to hang with him.  He pulled my by a bike length, then before turn
one on the front straight he lost it.  I had no where to go, so I came within
inches of running his neck over.  I thought I was going to crash too but I
was lucky and avoided him.  I led again until the next lap when Bemisderfer
passed me, I followed him for a lap hanging with him pretty good.  Then
going into turn four, where there is a sealer patch that you have to go
around in the wet, he ran wide, then off the track.  I tried to ride hard
knowing this was my chance, but there were guys crashing all over.  I kept
dropping my lap times, but Brian was catching.  I rode the last lap hard,
then coming down the hill through the last corner I hit the same puddle that
caused Nate Kern to crash and almost high sided myself.  I landed back
down into the seat and gunned it, but Brian got the better drive and beat me
to the line.  I folded under the pressure, again an idiot.  Oh-well, I was happy
to finish on the box, I only lost a few points to Bemisderfer, and gained a
bunch on Bilansky and Kern.  So overall it was a good weekend for the
Veatch Motorsports team.

06'  SCHEDULE  &  RESULTS
Summit Point is a fun track, but a little rough to say the least.  It always takes
a couple practices to get used to the bumps and concrete patches.
The C.C.S. Thunderbike race was fun, we were in the lead by turn one on the
second lap.  Stayed there until the last lap when Bemisderfer got next to me
going into turn one.  I threw it in on the outside of him so we were side by
side, then out drove him to turn three.  Then I passed a lapper that held him
up going into five, I had a little gap and kept that for the win.  I got to race a
Buell
XBRR in the Supertwins race.  It was my first time on it for the
weekend, but it handled good, and the power was great.  I took the lead on
lap two, led all of it until the last lap, when Bemisderfer passed me going into
turn one again, but this time he made it stick.  I stuck to him then re-passed
him in between turns nine and ten, got a good drive out of the final corner
and held on for win #2 of the weekend.  I qualified third to the ASRA
Thunderbike race.  I had a shitty start, but worked my way to the lead by lap
four.  Then it was a battle between myself, Bemisderfer and Bilansky.  We all
took turns taking the lead, on the last lap Bilansky was leading, I was in
second.  Bemisderfer passed me going into turn five, we caught lappers in
turn nine, they got passed them and I didn't.  I was still close enough to try a
draft coming out of the final corner with a good drive.  Then the same thing
happened, a lapper again, they went through and he closed the door on me.
My race was over, so I came home third.  On the box, but didn't help much
for the points battle.

Barber
I love racing at  Barber, the track is great, the pits are good, and it's pretty close to
home.  This was the first weekend I brought Jaime with me, my 5 month old daughter.
So I wanted to do good, represent.  It was a double header weekend so we had a CCS
Supertwins and Thunderbike race both Friday and Saturday.  Glen from Veatch
Motorsports built me a new Firebolt to beat on for the remainder of the season.  The
bikes virgin run went well, we had a couple bugs to work-out, but overall the bike felt
good.  The first race of the weekend was ccs Thunderbike.  I got a good launch, was
2nd. into turn one, then took the lead going into two.  Rode hard until half way flag,
looked back and I was by myself.  Put it on cruise and won the first race of the weekend,
good start.  Next was the supertwins race, not as good a start, but was 3rd into turn
one.  Passed Bemisderfer going into turn four, Kern had about ten bike lengths on me at
this time.  Put my head down, caught him a lap later, then made the pass coming out of
turn 4.  At the end I had a 6 second gap on second, race win #2.  It started raining
overnight and was a wet track in the morning.  I'm never thrilled with the wet, but I don't
suck in it.  There are sealer strips all over the track, so I thought it was going to be slick.
To my surprise, the traction was great, the strips were a little slick, but not bad.  It was
still wet for qualifying, went out to feel it out when Bilansky went flying past me.  Time to
step it up.  I saw where he was faster and picked it up.  I started to catch him, so I was
confident to be on the front row cause I know Dan's fast in the wet.  I came in to find out
I put it on the pole, first in the rain in a while, that was awesome cause I needed the
extra point.  Next for the day was supertwins, we had rains on but the track was drying
fast, about 3/4 dry track.  Ok launch, fourth into one, passed Bemisderfer and one other
guy going into turn four, Bilansky had at least 15 bikes on me.  We stayed the same for
most the race, but in the last couple laps I started to catch him.  I caught him on the
white flag lap.  Got a better drive out of the final corner, got next to him going down the
straight and out broke him going into one.  I pushed wide so he re passed me going into
two, but I had a better drive out of three, then out broke him going into turn four.  I held
him off from there for the win.  It was a fun race, the rain tires were cooked, we were
sliding like crazy.  Dan had a softer compound on the front and he cooked it bad, thats
why I was able to catch him so quick at the end.  By the thunderbike race at the end of
the day it was dry.  I was second off the start behind Bemisderfer, passed him after a
lap and held on to the lead until the second to last lap.  Brian passed me going into the
last corner, but pushed wide so I got the drive on him and re passed him going into one.
I knew he was coming in the same corner on the last lap, I tried to protect the inside, but
he got in there for the lead.  I got the drive again but came up about one foot short.
Second was still great, it was a fun battle with Brian.  It was nice on Sunday, we had a
12 lad race.  I wheelied of the start so I was fourth into one. Passed Rozynski and
started to catch Bemisderfer and Bilansky.  I got a great drive out of the final corner and
passed both of the down the straight and into one.  I put in some good laps, was sliding
the rear too much, but felt good.  Looked past at half way, Dan was about five bike
lengths behind me, but no Brian in sight.  Found out later he had tranny problems,
finished sixth.  I started to catch traffic, when my transmission started to miss shifts.  I
got a little gap working the lapped riders, but it kept missing gears, I knew he was close.
On the last lap, coming out of the last corner, it hit a neutral.  It felt like forever till it went
in, I got on it, I had no drive though.  Dan started to come around me, but it was too late,
we passed the checkered. I won the main!!  My bike was 420 lbs. @ 101.2 hp. after the
race.
It was a great weekend, pole position and four out of five wins, I did my girl proud.  Now
she wont be embarrassed to come to the races with me.
